Buyer behavior signals

Hiring posts are the most underrated buying signal

By Starvik Team · · 2 min read

A job posting is a budget decision that already cleared approval, written down in public, with a date on it.

Most buying signals are inferred. A job posting is not inferred. It is a public statement that an organization decided to spend money on a specific capability, got that decision approved, and is now acting on it.

Why a posting is stronger than it looks

Posting a role is expensive and slow. It requires a budget line, a hiring manager, an approved level, and usually a sign off above the hiring manager. By the time the text is public, several people have already agreed that this capability matters enough to fund.

Compare that to a webinar registration or a page visit. Those cost the buyer nothing and commit them to nothing.

Reading a posting properly

The title is the least interesting part. The useful information is further down.

A posting for a first hire in a function means the function is being built. A posting for a fifth hire means it is being scaled. Those are different conversations with different people.

Timing

A posting has a useful life. Very early, nobody has been hired and the initiative has no owner to talk to. Very late, the hire has been made and the first decisions have already been taken.

The window in between is short and worth paying attention to, because that is when the problem is funded, acknowledged, and still open.

The obvious mistake

The obvious mistake is pitching the hiring manager on replacing the hire. Almost nobody responds well to that, because the hire represents a decision they already made and defended internally.

The better framing treats the posting as evidence that the problem is real and funded, and opens on the problem rather than on the posting.

Verification still matters

Postings go stale, get reposted, and sometimes exist for reasons that have nothing to do with a real opening. Keep the link and the date. A signal you cannot trace back to its source is one you will eventually repeat after it stopped being true.
